These wonderful gates are intwo sets, each made up of twenty-eightsections or panels, each one being a per-fect metal picture in relief and cast inone piece. They are practically the lifework of the celebrated Ghiberti, an artistof marvelous skill in modelling and theworking of metals. Nearly forty yearswas spent in the making of these commenced work on the firstset in 1403, which were not finisheduntil 1424. It is a singular fact, that while theprocess of extracting iron from its ores,and the making of it into wrought ironand steel had been known from the earli-est times, there is no evidence beforethis period to show that iron had beensmelted sufficiently to permit of it be-ing cast. It was not until the begin-ning of this period (the fifteenth century)that the German blow oven, an im-provement on the old Catalan forge,made it possible to raise the heat to apoint where the iron was sufficientlyliquid to permit of it being poured intomoulds that would give it shape andform.
