Wellington's Monument on Baslow Edge in the Derbyshire Peak District. It was erected in 1815 to celebrate Wellington's victory at the Battle of Waterloo. It was erected by a local man called Dr. Wrench who, as an army man, felt that a monument to Wellington was needed as there was one to Admiral Nelson on nearby Birchen Edge! Wrench was a local doctor and had been a Lt. Colonel in the army. The inscription reads: BORN WELLINGTON DIED. 1769 1852. ERECTED 1866 BY EM WRENCH. LATE (3-7 unclear) harsh moorland climate is gradually eroding the inscription.
