Mr. Grauten hasopened a consulting electrical engineer-ing office in Kansas City. He hassigned contracts to act as electricalengineer for the Kansas City Western,the Kansas City-Kaw Valley & West-ern, and the Pittsburg and Joplin Rail-ways, and also for several other roads. While with the Kansas City RailwaysMr. Grauten had charge of the rede-signing and construction of the entiredistribution system, which included therearrangement of substations and theinstallation of new ones. Some of thesewere automatics and were among thefirst to be installed in the United duties included preparing the esti-mates, specifications, plans and con-. s. li. grauten tracts, and supervising the 1918 he was also responsible for theoperation of the distribution system,involving power dispatching, substa-tions and the transmission system. Atthe same time he was also engaged inan electrolysis investigation in connec-tion with engineers of the United GasImprovement Company and the re-search committee of the AmericanCommittee on Electrolysis. An article appeared in the Journalof Dec. 11 under Mr. Grautens namein which he described the most recentlycompleted substation, where there wereincorporated several unusual featuresof building design and equipment. Since his graduation from the Uni-versity of Illinois in 1907 Mr. Grautensexperience has been wide. His firstyear out of school was spent at theMassachusetts Institute of Technologyat Boston as an instructor.
