Voltameter electrode. Platinum voltameter electrode displayed outside its protective glass tube. In use, the electrode (metal foil at top) would be placed in its tube with an electrolyte and secured with the rubber bung being held here. Current is supplied through the coiled wire, and the device is then used to measure the quantity of electricity. This is done by measuring the amount of material deposited on the electrode as electrolysis takes place. As platinum is rather an inert metal, silver electrodes are usually used.
