On the night of the 15th December 2011, the Maltese-registered TK Bremen, a cargo ship carrying over 220 tons of fuel oil, ran aground on Erdeven beach in Brittany, France. The vessel became stranded as a result of severe hurricane-force winds from storm Joachim. The boat began to leak immediately, but the spill was quickly contained and the cleanup operation only took just over a month.
