5TH FLEET AREA OF OPERATIONS (March 7, 2017) Sgt. Ryan Boehringer, assigned to the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), fires an M240B machine gun during crew-served weapons training aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8). Makin Island, with the embarked 11th MEU, is deployed in the 5th Fleet area of operations in support of maritime security operations designed to reassure allies and partners, and preserve the freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce in the region.
