This is an opencast mining site in the UK. Coal is dug from seams close to the surface of the land, in this case in Derbyshire. There was a lot of opposition to the siting of the mine. Much work is done to reduce noise and dust and the landscape is returned to farming land with the correct soil and subsoil structure recreated as the mining proceeds and finishes.
