Peter the Great Interrogates Alexis
Peter I, better known as Peter the Great, was born in 1672 and died in 1725. He is credited as the founder of the modern Russian state. The conservative oppostion saw him as the Antichrist and his son Alexis joined the opposition. Alexis was apprehended, tortured, and died in prison in 1718. Here, Alexis (left) is being interrogated by his father. This painting by Russian artist Nikolai Ge (1831-1894) now hangs in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Russia.
