ATHEROMA

An atheroma is a lipid deposit in blood vessels mainly composed of cholesterol. The fatty substance is deposited in the internal tunic of the large and medium sized arteries. The atheroma may ulcerate and release fatty pus-like particles into the bloodstream. The atheroma may also become calcified, the first step towards the development of atheroslerosis. Here an X-ray examination with injection of a contrast agent visualizes the atheromatous plaque.
