Newton's Cottage, London, United Kingdom. Architect: Observatorium, 2014. Timber structure with context.

Newton’s Cottage is an new art commission on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park designed by Rotterdam-based art/architecture collective Observatorium. Commissioned by the London Legacy Development Corporation in partnership with the Canal & River Trust. This sculpture echoes the form of the lock keepers cottage that was located at Carpenters Road Lock – a historically significant lock over the River Lea. Named after C. Newton, the last lock keeper of Carpenters Road Lock, the project celebrates the history and heritage of this unique site and also of the waterways of London. The project sits below a diagonal bridge by architects Heneghan Peng built across the lock and covered by a colourful spotted surface made out of recycled trainers. The construction of Newton's Cottage was made in collaboration with the Building Crafts College in Stratford.
