View SW at the larger of two stone circles in Temple Wood copse, Kilmartin, Scotland, UK. The site was the focus for burials over many centuries & remodelled several times in the Neolithic & Bronze Age periods (3rd millennium BC). The site is displayed in its final form with the 22 uprights masked by a spread of stones sealing two small burial cairns. Burials in cists were made inside & outside the circle, & at some point smaller slabs were erected between the free-standing monoliths to form a closed circle. Both circles were aligned to movements of the sun & moon, & used in conjunction with a setting of standing stones 310m to the S. Trees were planted in the late C19th & the site given the name of Temple Wood.
