Behind Augustus are Neptuneand Cybele, who seem to be symbols of his powers over landand sea. CELEBRATED ENOBAYED STONES. 275. TAZZA FARNESE. III. The Tazza Farnese, at Naples. It is composed of a singlepiece of sardonyx, and is nearly a foot in diameter. The subjectof the sculpture has given rise to much learned and elaboratedisquisition. It is generally supposed to represent the apothe-osis of the first Ptolemy. According to Professor Quaranta,it represents Ptolemy Philadelphus, consecrating the festival ofthe harvest instituted by Alexander the Great, at the time ofthe foundation of Alexandria. The outside is ornamented withthe head of Medusa. The place of its discovery is is supposed to have been found in the Villa Adriana, nearEome. IV. The portraits of Ptolemy Philadelphus, and his first wifeArsinoe. According to Visconti, the head of Ptolemy Energetes,and Berenice. It is in the Imperial collection of Kussia.
