MINGUN, Myanmar — Mingun is a town not far from Mandalay that is famous for the massive Mingun Bell and the Unfinished Pagoda nearby.

Situated on the western banks of the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar, the village of Mingun presents a blend of natural beauty, rural life, and rich history. With a population of only a few thousand, Mingun's laid-back atmosphere offers a contrast to the hustle and bustle of Myanmar's cities. Mingun is most renowned for its historical sites. The village's main attraction is the Mingun Pahtodawgyi, an unfinished stupa that was intended to be the largest in the world. Despite being incomplete, the stupa's massive size still inspires awe. The site also features massive cracks resulting from an 1839 earthquake, adding to its historic and architectural interest. Another significant landmark in Mingun is the Mingun Bell, regarded as the world's largest ringing bell. Weighing over 90 tons, the bell was intended to accompany the Mingun Pahtodawgyi stupa. It's now a standalone attraction, drawing visitors keen on hearing its deep, resonating sound. Daily life in Mingun revolves around the Irrawaddy River. The village's location on the riverbank influences its local economy and culture, with fishing and river trade being vital. Visitors can observe traditional boats and ferries plying the river, offering an authentic glimpse into Burmese river life.
