A heavy rain storm July 15 made at least a temporary break in the heat wave. It has been of great benefit to the farmers and gardeners, who were getting uneasy about the safety of their crops. No change was noted in the condition of the cut flower mar- ket, during the past week, but some of the wholesalers thought it was, if anything, a little worse than the pre- ceding week. Almost all the roses ar- riving were miserably poor. As one spectator remarked of the wholesalers : "They sell a few and don't know what to do with the ; Excepting the Francis Scott Keys, that are far ahead of all others as hot weather offerings, there does not seem to be any choice in roses; the heat puts its mark on all of them. At the present time the gladioli attract more attention than any other stock. Many are arriving and some fine specimens have been no- ticed. Generous displays of them en- able the retailers to keep up appear- ances, which is important, even in hot weather. A few fairly good asters are arriving and with the recent rains, it is believed that a good supply of the late ones will come in. Orchids are coming in in poor condition, which, coupled with the light demand, causes many to be left over. There is a con- siderable stock of larkspur on the mar- ket and it is good for display pur- poses. A limited stock of Rubrum and Auratum lilies is also on the market. The supply Of white lilies does not seem as heavy a,s it was the first of the month. A large amount of southern asparagus is arriving, much of it poor and shaking off. The balance of the carnations that are being received are too worthless even for funeral ' work. July 16 opened with cooler weather after the rain and there was a little more activity than on the preceding days of the week. July 18.—Although not by any means chilly, the weather is cooler
