The Eagle sailing north in 1897, photographed from the steamer Virgo. Swedish balloonist S. A. Andree attempted to reach the North Pole by air but the journey ended in tragedy when the hydrogen balloon failed and was grounded after a couple of days into the expedition. S. A. Andree (1854-97) and his companions, Nils Strindberg (1872-97) and Knut Fraenkel (1870-97), survived for three months before all three perished in the harsh Arctic terrain. The chance discovery in 1930 of the expedition's last camp yielded many documents from their disastrous journey.
