Fragments of Coped Coffin-lids of the Xllth century,Bakewell, Derbyshire. in Walmgate, another coped lid of an Anglo-Saxon stone coffinwas discovered, and with it several fragments of other monumentalstones. This Saxon relic, like its companion memorial at Bake- 14 CHRISTIAN MONUMENTS well, measures in length threefeet four inches, and is pro-fusely ornamented with figuresof strange animals, which areno less strangely mixed upwith scrolls and knot-work:the ridge of the coping also(which here forms an anglemuch less acute than at Bake-well), and the sides and endsof the stone, are traversed bya twisted molding.
