Lateral view of building with ceramic cladding. German Aerospace Centre (DLR), Bremen, Germany. Architect: Kister Scheithauer Gr

At the edge of the Technical University Bremerhaven campus Kister Scheithauer Gross Architects And Urban Planners created a new research complex for the German Aerospace Centre. Connected by a bridge, a two storey high laboratory extends the existing building. The assembly of compact satellites and other aerospace equipment requires highly specialized laboratory facilities and rooms. The two-storey building includes laboratories, workshops for the assembly of satellites and, despite tight security, a visitor center. The interior is characterized by blue strip lighting wrapping around the base, certainly putting the DLR’s resident lab rats in the mood for some high science. Providing a corporate identity for the DLR the building received a skin of specially developed ceramic tiles similar to the heat resistant ones of a space shuttle.
