In 1892his book Cast Iron was published, andis the best known product of his pen. The use of liquid ferro-manganese insteel making is being discussed in Ameri-can steel circles. The advantages claim-ed for this method over solid ferro-man-ganese are an appreciable direct savingin ferro-manganese, a yield of moreuniform steel, a shortening of the timeof the heat, and a reduction of the tem-perature of the heat. Where the methodhas been adopted the alloy is pre-meltedin an electric furnace and added in liquidform to the molten steel. The practice, says the Ironmonger, is said to be ofGerman origin. Swedish and Germanexperience is said to show that on anaverage it saves 44 per cent, in Oa FIG. 7—One half of core arbor for main core, showing curved iron enclosure for coke. The ; marked A with bolt holes for fastening the two halves together, project through the core and are securely fastened to the flask, making the core perfectly secure. November, 1918. 271 FOR THE MAN WHO WORKS IN THE SHOP Hinged Flasks for Medium Heavy Work For Lathe Beds and Similar Castings This Style of Flask Can beUtilized to Good Advantage THE roll-up flask has long beenKnown and its advantages appre-ciated by foundrymen doing a lineof work such as stove plate and agricul-tural implements or any similar its use it was possible for one manto roll up with comparative ease whatwould ordinarily have been h heavy liftfor two men, and by being careful in thearrangement of patterns on the followboard a much .more satisfactory jobwould be accomplish**! by rolling thanby lifting. In lifting off a cope there isalways more or less trouble causedthrough
