A typical elaborate blue doorway No. 13 and white stucco walls in one of the narrow streets of the medina in Hammamet.
A medina quarter section found in many North African cities is typically walled, contains many narrow and maze-like streets. The word "medina" itself simply means "city" or "town" in modern day Arabic. The small Medina in Hammamet, surrounded by 15th century walls, is a maze of narrow and sometimes covered lanes. The wares displayed in the souks are all designed to appeal to the tourists and unfortunately rather over-priced, consisting mostly of embroidery, pottery, leather goods and carpets.
