The Albany Orphan Asylum, on Washington Street, at thejunction of the Western Turnpike, was incorporated in 1831 ; it waserected, was as the City Hospital, by private subscription; it isnow aided by State funds. The St. Vincent Orphan Asylam, incorporated in 1849, is underthe charge of the Sisters of Mercy. The male department, two mileswest of the Capitol, is under charge of the Christian Brothers. There are upward of fifty church edifices. At No. 5 Fayette Place, is the studio of the distinguishedsculptor, E. C. Palmer, whose Angel at the Sepulchre hasadded so greatly to his earlier fame. Above the city, on the flats, is the Schuyler House, a plain andantiquated dwelling. Here dwelt Colonel Peter Schuyler, thefirst Mayor of Albany, who took four Sachems of the Mohawktribe to England, and created no small sensation by presentingthem at the Court of Queen Anne. In 1759, it was destroyed byfire—the means of extinguishing fires at that day being chiefly,that it rained sometimes.
