Delicate instruments were developed by al-Zahrawi and others for eye surgery including scalpels, cauteries, retractors, speculums and scissors. The scissors created for eye surgery were amongst the first scissors used anywhere in the world. The scalpels invented by early Islamic surgeons compare in quality with the instruments used today.
