Swiss humanitarian Henry Dunant (1828 - 1910) - co-founder of the Red Cross and joint winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1901.
Vintage portrait photo c1900 of Swiss businessman and humanitarian Henry Dunant (1828 - 1910) - co-founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross and joint winner of the first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901. Dunant became involved in humanitarian work during a business trip to Lombardy in 1859 in which he witnessed the horrific aftermath of the Battle of Solferino. The engagement left thousands of wounded soldiers on the battlefield and a shocked Dunant personally organised efforts to help the injured. He subsequently wrote and published a book about his experiences entitled Un Souvenir de Solferino (A Memory of Solferino) and suggested that a neutral organisation should exist to provide care for wounded soldiers. His ideas led to the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1863 and in 1864 the First Geneva Convention was signed by 12 states which defined "the basis on which rest the rules of international law for the protection of the victims of armed conflicts".
