Protecting threatened and endangered species. Ellicott Slough National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1975 to protect the endangered Santa Cruz long-toed salamander, and supports two of the 24 known breeding salamander populations. Although many refuges are open to the public, due to the sensitivity of this habitat, Ellicott Slough NWR is not publicly accessible.
