View NE of Drombeg recumbent stone circle, Co. Cork, Republic of Ireland, showing the grey recumbent stone at the SW directly opposite the entrance flanked by tall portal stones. The entrance & recumbent are aligned to the winter solstice sunset in a notch on the SW skyline. Other solar alignments are built into the circle. originally 17 pillars of pale sandstone made a diameter circle. The cremated remains of an adolescent were buried in a pit inside the circle & the surface sealed with 10cm of gravel which had become compacted, possibly by dancing. To the W are two conjoined hut circles & a cooking-place with a well, hearth and stone trough where water was bioled & meat cooked using heated stones. The circle was made/used very late in the Bronze Age.
