After her marriage with M. Roland,she assisted him in his literary and otheravocations. Her principles were decidedlyrepublican, and she was a warm and elo-quent defender of the government whichwas established on the ruins of the to the jacobins she was as ardentlyhostile, and, when they succeeded in over-throwing the Girondists, she became oneof the victims. She was guillotined, No-vember 8, 1793. She wrote An Appeal toImpartial Posterity ; and Miscellaneous\V(jrks, in three ROLLIN, Charlks, an eminent histo-rian, was born, in 1661, at Paris. Hewas the son of a cutler, who designed himto follow bis own trade; but a Benedictinemonk obtained his admission il ihccidlegeof Du Plessis. After having acquired therea knowledge of languages and philosophy,he studied theology lor three years at theSorbonne. Between 1683 and 1693, hefilled the chairs of professor of rhetoricand of clo(iucncc at the college of DuPlessis and the Royal College. In 1694,he was appointed rector of the university,and, in 1696, coadjutor of the college ofBcauvais. The last post he held for fif ROM teen years, greatly to the advantage of thestudents; but he was at length driven fromit by the intrigues of the Jesuits.
