Menopausal uterus. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the lining (endometrium) of a uterus showing signs of the menopause. The symptoms here were brought on by the drug Decapeptyl, used to treat endometriosis (implant- ation of uterine lining fragments outside the uterus). The menopause is the cessation of the fertile period of a woman's life, caused by ceased production of the hormone oestrogen. Visible signs here are the lack of ciliated cells and the large gaps between cells. The menopause can also cause vaginal dryness, hot flushes, loss of libido and anxiety.
