Sudbury impact event. Artwork of a large asteroid and asteroid fragments impacting the Earth some billion years ago in what is now Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. This is one of the oldest known impact events where parts of the resulting crater still exist. The crater was some 250 kilometres across, the second-largest known on Earth, but the remnant is a smaller, deformed ellipsoid shape (the Sudbury Basin) some 60 kilometres long. It is thought the asteroid that formed the original crater was some 10 kilometres across.
