The Treasury Department, in enforcingthe provisions of Section 4436 of theUnited States Revised Statutes, regard-ing the specifications as to the manu-facture of fusible plugs, have directedattention to this well-known article, andrequire that all plugs used on boilers ofsteam vessels should be made of bronzeand have no other filling but pure Bancatin. Since the disaster atPhiladelphia last fall, the United StatesSteamboat Inspection Service of theTreasury Department, has taken cogni-zance of the fact that inferior plugs werebeing used, and issued a circular requir-ing that all fusible plugs should be filledwith pure Banca tin and stamped with themanufacturers name, and that an affi-davit setting forth this fact should befiled with the inspector having charge ofthe boiler inspection at whatever pointthe plugs are used. Two forms of plugs, namely, the out-side and inside patterns are shown withthis. They are made to be screwed in,either from the inside of the boiler orfrom the outside through the fire-boxor shell.
