Spring a few days of the establishment of BowlingGreen, another town was laid out on the river in the westernpart of the county. The newly founded village was locatedso as to enjoy the river traffic. It was in what was at thattime known as Tazewell county, and it was quite naturalthat the town should first be known as Tazewell. Later thename was changed to Spring Bay, because of the number ofsprings found in that region. The town was platted forJames Day and Henry Matson, the plat bearing the date ofApril 2nd, 1836. The first store was conducted by a mannamed Rice. In 1843 Ira Y. Munn came to the village andopened a store which was conducted for several years underthe firm name of Scott & Munn.
