Franklin Roosevelt and polio, 1940s. US President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945) in February 1941 in his wheelchair on the porch at Top Cottage in Hyde Park, New York, USA, with a friend's daughter (Ruthie Bie) and his dog Fala. Roosevelt was paralysed from the waist down due to contracting polio at the age of 39 in 1921. Polio, also known as poliomyelitis and infantile paralysis, is a childhood disease caused by a virus Polio epidemics in the early 20th century left thousands paralysed. Roosevelt was rarely photographed in his wheelchair in public, making public speeches and appearances with the use of leg braces, crutches and other supports.
