These requisites havebeen successfully incorporated in the design of the Keeler watertube boilers. The path of these gases is such that they must pass betweenthe staggered boiler tubes three times, and then pass the steam drumbefore reaching the stack. By thus being forced to pass first up, thendown, then up again between the tubes, the gases are given muchtime in which to lose their heat to the water tubes before passingout through the stack to the air. It will be noticed that the hottestgases come in contact with the tubes at the highest portion nearthe steam drum, and the hottest passage is through the middleof the tubes anil the last passage throiigli tlic section nearest the
