Alexander Fleming, Scottish bacteriologist and discoverer of penicillin (born 6 August 1881, died 11 March 1955). He is seen in his laboratory at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, London, in 1909. It was in this laboratory that he discovered in 1928 that secretions from a fungus called Penicillium notatum destroyed colonies of the bacterium Staphylococcus sp. The secretion was named an antibiotic. Clinical trials and the commercial production of penicillin and other antibiotics did not occur until the Second World War.
