Dutch land yachts. Historical illustration of land yachts in use on a beach in the 16th century, with ships and fishing boats in the background. This artwork shows the land yachts developed by Flemish engineer Simon Stevin (1548-1620) in 1598. Also called 'wind chariots', these 'buses with sails' were created for Prince Maurice of Orange (from Nassau). They were used to entertain his guests. The larger land yacht could transport 28 people for 75 kilometres on a two-hour journey. This artwork is titled 'Currus veliferi Pr. Mauritii Nassouii'. It is from 'Toonneel der steden van de Vereenighde Nederlanden' (Amsterdam, 1652) by Joan Blaeu (1596-1673).
