A meter maid places her calling card on a parked car in a parking meter bay at Surfers Paradise in Queensland,Australia The meter maids wearing their famous gold bikinis at Surfers Paradise in Queensland,Australia have been around since 1967. Their function was to feed expired meters with coins to prevent motorists being fined and also leaving their calling cards on the windscreen until the introduction of 'pay and display' machines. The Gold Coast Tourism no longer supports the meter maids and now the maids rely on public donations for charities. The meter maids charge five Australian dollars to anyone wanting to pose with them in a photograph and also sell their own merchandise to the public.
