She was much depressed with herlonely, friendless life. But, she said, lookat this innocent creeper. It is growing everyday. You see, I mark its height with theknots every evening, and how nice it is tosee it growing! And I feel perfectly happywhen I see those vines are twisting them-selves to the bamboo railings. This vine isthe only real friend of mine in this world!I thoroughly understood her meaning. Shewas much suppressed by her surroundingpeople, and she so badly wanted to growup freely, and now, seeing the nature was 14. -^e^*— DARWEN TULIPS. FRIENDSHIP so natural, she and that vine had such deepaffinity. Even the flowers, birds, and animalshave some strong affinity to our friend-seek-ing hearts. And almost all genuine humanbeings have always made friendship with thosenatural beings, because their own natures areso simple and sincere and their hearts aretouched with the natural beings. But if thehuman heart can understand the other humanheart and touch each other, nothing couldbe sweeter in this world. Even if we wereborn in the different period and could notmeet each other, we can well enjoy our friend-ship through the books. But how lucky mustbe one who has met with his real friend in thisworld! And I was really the very luckiestone when I met with my compatriot artist,Bushio Hara, in London. Our friendshipwas that of water, and not like chocolateor syrup.
