Locals study English language during a class in the village of Pare.

June 21, 2013 - Kediri, Indonesia. Locals study English language during a class in the village of Pare. "English Village" is the nickname for the village of Pare in Kediri, East Java. The village has around 114 English language colleges and institutions, which has led to the whole area becoming a centre of English education in the region. English has permeated the region to an extent that it has become the lingua franca of the area. The low cost of living and easy access by bicycles has turned this remote village into prime destination for students aiming to learn English. Mr. Osen Kalend started the first course called Basic English Course in the region in 1985. Since then, institutes have mushroomed all over the town including some which teach in huts and on porches of residential houses. Peak crowd in "English Village" is the month of July-August, this is a period of long school holidays in Indonesia.
