I myself was not greatly surprisedat this confession of the sculptors frequent disappointments, forI knew that his ideals were always far ahead of the possibility oftheir full expression in the cold marble. Nor was I greatly sur-prised at his marvellous success when I considered his conscien-tious and patient fidelity, of which I had seen many of these he revealed in a letter to me, November 6, 1884,in which he said, In modelling the bust everything in the shapeof a photograph will be valuable, even those taken in childhood. 4 r.
