Hand acquirefi liis eariv education in Camden, completing tlie grammarschool conr?e there at the age of eleven , and then attended (he public schoolsof Philadelphia for two years. He studied under a private tutor and alsospent a year in the United States Military Academy. His love of books has promptedhim to continue his reading, study and investigation in later years, and he is con-tinually adding to his fund of knowledge. When he put aside his text books tolearn the more difficult lessons in the school of experience he was employed for three>ears in various capacities in Philadelphia. In 187,3 he came to Cape May with hisfather. At the age of nineteen he became a teacher at Heislerville, Cumberlandcounty, and subsequently was engaged in teaching at Dennisville and at Rio Grand
