Full Solar Halo

This full solar halo formed by the refraction of sunlight from ice crystals in cirrus clouds. Mauna Loa, Hawaii, May 22, 2005. A halo (also known as a nimbus, icebow or gloriole) is an optical phenomenon produced by ice crystals creating colored or white arcs and spots in the sky. Many are near the sun or moon but others are elsewhere and even in the opposite part of the sky. They can also form around artificial lights in very cold weather when ice crystals called diamond dust are floating in the nearby air. A 22å¡ halo is a halo, one type of optical phenomenon, forming a circle 22å¡ around the sun, or occasionally the moon. It forms as sunlight is refracted in hexagonal ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere.
