A system of elocution, with special reference to gesture, to the treatment of stammering, and defective articulation .. . Admiration, if of surrounding natural objects, of apleasing kind, holds both hands vertical, and across, and then moves them outwards to the position extendedas in the figure. (Fig. 100.) In admiration arisingfrom some extraordinary or unexpected circumstances, the hands are thrown up supine elevated, together withthe face and the eyes. Veneration crosses both hands on the breast, casts down the eyes slow-ly, and bows thehead. (Fig. 101.) Deprecation ad-vances in the ex-tended position ofthe feet, approach-ing to kneeling, clasps the handsforcibly together, throws back thehead, sinking it be-101 102 tween the shoul- ders, and looks earnestly up to the person implored.(Fig. 102.). 8 GESTURE In appealing to heaven, the right hand is laid on thebreast, then the left is projected su-pine upwards; the eyes are first di-rected forwards, and then upwards.(Fig. 103.) In the appeal to conscience, theright hand is laid on the breast, theleft drops unmoved, the eyes are fixedupon the person addressed (Fig. 80, ); sometimes both hands press thebreast. Shame in the extreme sinks on theknee, and covers the eyes with bothhands. (Fig. 104.) This is a femi-nine expression of it. Mild resignation falls on the knee, crosses the arms on the breast, and looks forwards andupwards towards heaven. (Fig. 105.)
