Alberobello,'Trulli' style houses with decorative style rooves each with its cross on have existed since 15th C. AD

Alberobello is a small town (about 11,000) in Puglia in southern Italy containing a small colony of houses known as 'Trulli'. The shape describes the roofs which are set in a decorative pinnacle, and they may have a similar history to nearby Matera. They are certainly akin to an ancient civilisation of trogladyte (people who lived in caves). They were a highly religous story that when the Italian tax collectors came, the houses are built on drystone easily dismantled to avoid tax, may be apochryphal or maybe true.
