Marconi as High Commissioner to the USA. Stepping out of the car at centre in military uniform is Italian physicist Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937). Marconi is most famous for his pioneering radio invention, patented in 1897, established the Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Company in London. In 1909 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. During World War I, the USA and Italy fought on the same side and Marconi was a staff officer with the Italian Army, with special responsibility for radio. He was a member of the Italian Government mission to the United States in 1917, and was appointed High Commissioner to the USA. Photographed in 1917.
