ELLIPTOCYTE

An elliptocyte is an elliptical red cell. Elliptocytosis is an hereditary disease caused by an abnormal form of spectrin, a protein found in the red cell membrane. Three types of elliptocytosis can be observed. The most frequent form is a silent condition where the only manifestation is an abnormal number of elliptocytes in the bloodstream. Anemia develops in a slightly more severe form but the organism compensates spontaneously. In severe elliptocytosis, red cell destruction requires transfusion. Splenectomy (removal of the spleen) may be necessary because this organ destroys deformed red cells.
