Esther Pohl Lovejoy (1869-1967), US physician. Born Esther Clayson, Lovejoy was the second woman to graduate from the University of Oregon's medical school (1894). She was also a public health pioneer, a suffrage activist, and a congressional candidate. She took part in the woman suffrage campaign in Oregon in 1912. Lovejoy served as first president of the Medical Women's International Association (1919). This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries, with photographs dating from the 1890s to the 1930s.
