Environmental devastation around Queenstown, Tasmania.

Detail of an erosion gully in the Queenstown, Tasmania, region, with a road in the background. The gully is filled with rubbish but regeneration is just beginning in the sheltered parts. The hills in this region have been stripped and eroded by over 100 years of mining activity. These once heavily-forested areas were stripped bare in the 1890s and 1900s to provide wood for the mines’ smelting furnaces. The landscape still bears the scars. An environmental disaster area.
