The archaeological site of Vijayanagar, more commonly known as Hampi, after the village that lies near its centre. A stunning ruined city of the Hindus, overun and partly destroyed by Muslim armies, it remains a vast complex of abandoned temples in a surreal landscape of giant boulders. Hampi is an important tourist destination and a popular one among backpackers. The site sprawls over 26 square kilometres the city dates from 1343 and enjoyed its heyday in the early sixteenth century. EDITORIAL USE ONLY
