Operation of the Moist-air Dry Kiln To obtain the best results these kilns should be keptin continuous operation when once started, that is, theyshould be operated continuously day and night. Whennot in operation at night or on Sundays, and the kiln isused to season green stock direct from the saw, the largedoors at both ends of the kiln should be opened wide, orthe material to be dried will sap stain. It is highly important that the operator attending anydrying apparatus keep a minute and accurate record of TYPES OF DRY KILNS 193. Records of the temperature and humidity should betaken frequently and at stated periods for the differentthicknesses and species of material, in order that he mayhave reliable data to guide him in future operations. The following facts should be taken into considerationwhen operating the Moist-air dry kiln: 1. Before any material has been placed in the drying room, the steam should be turned into the heatingor radiating coils, gradually warming them, andbringing the temperature in the kiln up to thedesired degree. 2. Care should be exercised that there is sufficient humidity in the receiving or loading end of thekiln, in order to guard against checking, case-hardening, etc. Therefore it is essential that thes
