Richard Wiseman (1622-1676), English surgeon. Wiseman took part in the English Civil War (1642-1651), serving with Royalist forces and attending to the 14-year-old Prince of Wales (the future Charles II). Wiseman was later captured and made prisoner, resuming his career as a surgeon on his release. On the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, he was appointed surgeon to King Charles II, rising to the rank of principal surgeon and serjeant-surgeon. Wiseman's medical works include 'A Treatise of Wounds' (1672) and 'Severall Chirurgical Treatises' (1676). This artwork dates from 1660, the year a miniature of Wiseman was painted by Samuel Cooper.
