Place this gage on the track between the railsand over the track center where you wish to begin lin-ing the rails to place. Then have your men move thetrack with their lining bars until the center, as markedon the gage, comes directly over the track centerpoint on the stakes. Move the track in this manner. Fig. 48. Care should be taken not to make any mistakes inmeasuring the middle ordinates, or in setting the trackcenters. It will pay to take your time and do the jobwell, because if properly done (like well surfaced 240 THE TRACKMANS HELPER track) it will need to be retouched only in spots after-wards. By commencing at a rail joint, this method of lininga curve may also be applied to the gage side of therails, and any defects in the track line can be takenout by moving the rails to place as you go,
