Avenue of Beech Trees in the Snow at Calderstones Park, Liverpool, Merseyside, North West England, United Kingdom

CALDERSTONES PARK (SNOW SCENE) A snow scene taken in Calderstones Park, Childwall, Liverpool. Calderstones Park was originally part of the 1583 acre expanse of the Manor of Allerton. Around 1726 the area now known as Calderstones Park was sold to pay off family debts. Eventually Thomas Martin, a Liverpool merchant became the owner. In 1825 the estate was sold to Joseph Need Walker. In 1828 the old farmhouse was swept aside to make way for the ‘Calderstones’ the Mansion House. Under the Need-Walker ownership additional land was purchased, creating a holding of 94 acres. The estate was sold to Charles MacIver in 1875 a local shipping magnate for £52,000. He joined Samuel Cunard in establishing the ‘British and North American Royal Steam Packet Company’ - later known as the Cunard Line. In 1874 Charles retired and his sons, Henry and Charles took over. In 1902 the MacIvers sold Calderstones to Liverpool Corporation for £43,000. Today, Calderstones is one of Liverpool’s finest parks and features The Mansion House, Stable Block, Coach House Gallery, Children’s Playground, Allerton Oak, Pineatum, ornamental Gardens, Glasshouse, Herbaceous Border, Rhododendron Walk, Ha Ha, Rose Garden, Neolithic Calderstones, Bog Garden and Tennis Courts
